- Wonderstruck Cast at Cannes Film Festival
Wonderstruck opens the competition at Cannes 70th anniversary celebration. The film is a celebration of childhood in New York City.
The film synopsis is a young boy in the Midwest story is told simultaneously with a tale about a young girl in New York from fifty years earlier. They both seek the same mysterious
connection during the film.
Todd Haynes, director, based on the film from a book by Brian Selznick. He takes this film from the child's interest in a woman's story from fifty year previous. Selznick's work understands the complexity of children instead of simplifying children. The film allows the children to propel forward to figure out about themselves while isolated from their past and families.
- Rose, Millicent Simmonds, Wonderstruck
Haynes states during an interview at Cannes, "It is respecting children the start. Then casting these extraordinary children. Finding a deaf children actress who has never acted before, Millicent Simmonds, (Rose) and then Oakes Fegley (Minnesotan Ben), in the film, is just a gift of this film to find these actors. Simmonds and Fegley rounded out the performances."
Simmonds is from Utah and attends Jean Massieu School of the Deaf, where she is in the drama club.
Fegley films include Fort Bliss and Pete's Dragon.

The
film really focuses on the imagination of children with clues that lead the mystery of why these two stories are sharing one film. There is two different time periods (1927 & 1977) represented in the film, as well as the connection between the silent black and white to color and sound.
This film demonstrates how film continuously develops and changes with technology. The film brings a realization to the world of visualization, tactile, and vitality.

Julianne Moore played roles in two different time periods in the film. She states at the press conference, "This came down to how we communicate. What languages we use. How we affectively use our bodies, hands, ourselves, without spoken English. How do you get to be in both rooms? I did not get to be in both rooms, but in the doorway. It was a great gift. It was an incredible experience." This is Moore's 4th film working with Haynes.
Haynes film is drawing attention to the language of film and everyday life. "It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see."
