Emmy Awards Nominations ~ Congratulations

69th Emmys® announce this year's nominees. It is a year filled with a huge expansion in television.  "It’s been a record-breaking year for television, continuing its explosive growth,” said Washington. “The Emmy Awards competition experienced a 15 percent increase in submissions for this year’s initial nomination round of online voting."

This year tthere are a few surprises, snubs, and record-breaking nominations. The streaming channels and originals shows are demonstrating strong talent against traditional televisions. HBO tops the nominations with 111 nominations. Westworld, first season on HBO, has 22 nominations. Netflix has 91 nominations.

Some of the unexpected nominations include Saturday Night Live, receiving 22 nominations, including 9 nominations for acting. Big Little Lies (HBO series after a bidding war with Netflix) with Reese Witherspoon 16 nominations. Best Drama Series 5 of the 7 nominations are first timers: Better Call Saul, The Crown, The Handmaid’s Tale, House of Cards, Stranger Things,  and This Is Us. A few other surprises are:

• Best Drama Actress Milo Ventimiglia, This Is Us
• Best Drama Supporting Actress Ann Dowd and Samira Wiley, The Handmaid’s Tale
• Best Drama Supporting Actor  David Harbour, Stranger Things

The year did have is snubs. Games of Thrones, receiving 38 Emmys® in the past, did not qualify for the nominations this season. Lena Dunham did not receive a nomination for her last year on Girls.

Unlikely Friends ~ "Slipaway"

Husband and wife, Julia Butler, and Daniel Mentz, presents Slipaway at Prescott Film Festival. The most unlikely duo becomes the best of friends on a self-discovery journey.

The film takes two different generations and puts them together at a time when their lives are struggling. They must overcome their differences in age, personality, and more. The journey takes them to becoming best friends while supporting each other’s dreams.

The script develops from Mentz's visit with Gwen Davis, author. He personally delivers a keyboard he sold to her on Craigslist. The visit became an all day adventure with cookies, tea, and scrapbooks. She told stories about hanging out on location with the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Cary Grant. Butler developed the screenplay after an evening of Mentz regaling the day's adventures. She is inspired by Davis' stories and life.

Mentz states, "We wanted to bring this message to the foreground, that relationships whether romantic or platonic do not have to be in the same age category. Relationships in different generations are not really discussed." The movie takes on generational struggles and friendships that assist with making dreams come true.


Fall, actress Elaine Partnow

Fall, played by actress Elaine Partnow, brings a lot to the role. Mentz says, "She brought the character to life much more than we could ever imagine." Partnow brings Fall to life with details that are specific to Fall's her generation. Partnow presents the need to be private and dressing up before leaving the house. Just a few details Partnow presents throughout the film that bring her generation to light.


Adam, actor Jesse Pepe

Adam, played by actor Jesse Pepe, presents with his own story and struggle from the start. His past is still very present. This takes precedence over Adam and Fall's individual dreams. Adam was not onboard with Fall's concept of dreaming in life,
     Adam: "It's a little cheesy, don't you think?"
     Fall: "Cheesy? Well, guess that means my whole life has been... cheesy."
Mentz and Butler's first feature film brings an unlikely pair together that takes you on a lifetime journey of self-discovery, laughter, and dreams.

Grief and Loss ~ "The Visit" a Film By Romina Schwedler

Romina Schwedler, screenwriter and director, presents her first film, The Visit, at Prescott Film Festival. This short film is a juxtaposition on life events.

The Visit is a day in the time of a visit with a mother (June Squibb) and son (Sean Maher). The story takes a moment in time for the son and develops a sequence of events that changes lives. The son must face the consequences of the events.

Schwedler's attention to details in the film completes the story. She states, "every little detail, in the lighting, the wardrobe design, and every odd thing matters." The juxtaposition of the story develops well with the details.

Schwedler develops the story from a conversation with her father about her aunt. Her aunt experiences loss of most family and friends. Coping with the deep grief and loss her aunt develops elaborate stories regarding those she lost. Her techniques in film development here allow the audience to experience the emotions in the story.

The casting for the short film was "serendipitous," she says. She approached June Squibb, Oscar nominated actress, at an award dinner in Los Angeles with a flash drive of the script. Sean Maher, Ben in the short film, heard about the project and appreciates June Squibb's work. His agent contacted Schwedler in regards to working on the project.  The casting provides a twist much like the film.

To Bring Pleasure ~ Jerry Lewis

Gregory Monro, writer and director, presents an insight to Jerry Lewis, filmmaker and actor, with the film Jerry Lewis The Man Behind The Clown at Prescott Film Festival (PFF). The film fits the complex talent and childlike nature of Lewis. The film brings an insight to the comedian, filmmaker, and his ability to bring pleasure to his audience. 

Capturing the early days of the 1950 and 1960s with personal clips brings laughter to the audience at PFF. His work with Dean Martin, a partnership developes after bar incident, capture the gentleman and childhood fun. When this partnership comes to an end, Lewis took on a new direction.
He steps into the behind the scenes role of filmmaking. Lewis takes time to learn all areas of filmmaking: directing, acting, camera, and production. His films included The Bellboy,  The Ladies Man (a briliant film), and many more.

Lewis took direction and acting to a serious  level by creating "Jerry's Noisy Toy." This invention changed film making forever. His ability to frame a film, create films years ahead of their time, and direct the vision of the film were groundbreaking. He states, "If you think talking to me is easy, your crazy," regarding directing himself.

The personal interviews with Sean Hayes, actor who played Lewis a TV biopic, Pierre Etaix, a French clown, and Martin Scorsese are personal. The interviews bring insight to the complexity of the man behind the clown face. Lewis was not only an American comedian, but internationally honored as an extraordinary film maker. Monro's film shows Lewis as many Americans see him, the childhood comedian, and the international view, an exceptional filmmaker. 

Often misunderstood and criticized for his work, but he brings brilliance to entertainment with laughter, art, and innovation to film. Lewis says, "If you give love to your audience they will give it back."He was always a child. Lewis says, I have always been 5." You could see this in his comedy and personality.

Lewis, a humanitarian, actor, comedian, film influencer, child, and man is in this film. He never lost his childhood spirit. This brought pleasure to his audiences enjoying his films.

The Magical and Mythical Morocco

As a child I remember watching the infamous movie “Casablanca” and dreaming that one day I would visit this magical destination filled with mystery, intrigue and old world charm. My wish came true when we took a trip to the far off land called Morocco.

Our first stop was the ancient city of Casablanca. One would think that with how famous the city of Casablanca is, it would live up to its reputation of charm. The easiest way to describe Casablanca would be that it is a hustling and bustling city, constantly on the move. This was a mecca of constant confusion. If you Think that New York City never sleeps, than you haven’t been to Casablanca.

It’s a City where the ancient walls and buildings still stand among the new generation of Youth, with smartphones, iPads, laptops and some electronic gadgets we have never seen before. Everyone is on the move from sunrise to sunset. The streets are narrow and congested with traffic, masses of pedestrians and meshed Arabic cultures and religious sects all co-existing together. The fastest way for anyone to get around is by moped, motorcycle or bicycle. As we drove through the city we couldn’t help but notice all the designated moped, motorcycle parking areas. We decided to continue our exploration and venture out to the ancient city of Marrakech.

The ancient city of Marrakech was a beautiful scenic drive, three hours outside of the city of Casablanca. On the way, we witnessed the history and changes of time, as we left the big city of Casablanca passing through lush green fields and open farmlands. We saw firsthand how the old meets the new on the way to the ancient city. Midway through our trip we stopped off at local roadside bakery and tasted Moroccan bread, commonly known as khobz or khubz. This round shaped, flattish bread has lots of crust and is popular among the locals for its unique taste, which is a pleasant combination of savory and sweet.

Upon our arrival to the entrance of the ancient city of Marrakech, we took in the breathtaking views of the outskirt suburb streets lined with palm trees and impeccable landscaping. It was obvious that this area was the Beverly Hills of Morocco, as everything looked picture perfect and nothing was out of place.

As we drove into the gates of the Ancient city of Marrakech, we saw firsthand the ominous walls that enveloped the ancient city and you could not help the feeling that you were being transported back to a mythical time when life was simple and not complicated by cellphones and the Internet and before advanced technologies existed in our society. This city is much different from Casablanca, as this is a city of charm, class and unique culture all rolled into one.

Once we made it through the gates of the ancient city of Marrakech, Our local hosts greeted us, sporting their traditional Moroccan robes referred to as a Djellaba. Next, we were escorted immediately to the Mosque. Generally, anyone that is not of their faith is not permitted to enter the premises, but was honored that we were granted special permission to enter, allowing us to experience the Muslim faith, religion, prayer and solitude firsthand.
After our visit to the Mosque, we had feast in an authentic Moroccan restaurant, complete with traditional belly dancers that balanced a lit candelabra on their heads accompanied by a live band playing folk songs.

Once we had our fill of Moroccan food and wine we took a tour of the ancient tombs and palaces. Our first stop was the El Bahia Palace. A beautiful building sits as an excellent example of Eastern Architecture from the 19th century that represents trends and standards of the wealthy that lived at that time.

No trip to Marrakech would be complete with a visit to the Souk, or as we call it the ancient marketplace. It is here where anything goes and everything is for sale. Thousands of local vendors set up shop within the walls of the city and sell their wares. Within these walls you can find whatever you are looking for and things that you thought you would never want or didn’t know to look for. Vendors include, Snake Charmers, Psychics, Gypsies, housewares, individual carts with authentic Moroccan foods of every kind, fruit stands, wine and unique spirits, clothing, monkey pet trainers and camel rides. We spent our trip absorbing local culture, being a part of ancient history and living out our dream of being able to experience and explore this country. A mystical and magical place that we recommend to everyone who wants to take a journey back in time. We will definitely return.

    • Mix ingredients to a paste. Massage into hair and wrap in plastic shower cap, sack, or wrap. Leave on hair 15-20 min. Wash with warm water and gentle shampoo. Style as usual.

What is old is new again. We see this from film, television, summer fashion trends, and food. The concept of farm to table is beginning to take traction in America. The concept that food is healthy, increases energy, and provides proper nutrients is a value many are finding for their lifestyle.

Anthony Pigliacampo, co-owner of Modern Market, decides in 2009 the time was like no other to step aside his corporate job and begin a change in food choices for eating out. The ability to find a healthy choice at a reasonable price was the basis for the restaurant. This was the beginning of Modern Market.

Modern Market brings the farm to table concept with a modern flair. The food is prepared from farm fresh ingredients in each location each day. Pigliacampo attends the soft opening of Ahwahnee's Modern Market. He states, "healthy food, every ingredient we consciously source. "We actually find the vendor, negotiate with our vendors about the quality products. Arizona is a good location for farm to table. Many of our greens are literally 30 hours ground to our restaurant."  The philosophy is a holistic view on health, added sugar is the devil and good fats are friends.

The evening was a delight. We enjoyed a warm cozy atmosphere. The menu is wholesome ingredients. The freshness was filled with savory flavors. Ray and I enjoyed:

  • Hormone and antibiotic free herb roasted chicken with chimichurri sauce
  • Macaroni and cheese 
  • Roasted asparagus
• Sesame Tofu 
  • Seasoned organic tofu
  • Lemon maple vinaigrette (served on the side)
  • Rosemary sweet potato mash 
  • Roasted asparagus

The restaurant provides self-service for ordering & drinks, prices affordable and warm atmosphere. The menu was beautifully simple. Looking forward to a healthier choice when eating out.
